“So with yourselves; if in a tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is being said?”   Corinthians 14:9

Dictionary of Church Terms

Bishop… The Biblical term for the one who exercises pastoral care and authority over a large number of Christians. Our bishop is the Rt. Rev. (abbreviation for Right Reverend) Robert J. O’Neill, Bishop of Colorado.

Congregation… All the people who belong to a particular church, which serves as their spiritual home and their home base for their Christian ministry in the world (sometimes the word “parish” is interchangeable).

Deacon… An order of the ordained ministry, charged particularly with a servant role in behalf of those in need, and to assist bishops and priests in the proclamation of the Gospel and the administration of the Sacraments. Deacons receive training for a significant period of time (2-5 years) that may or may not include seminary. A deacon is not authorized to pronounce absolution or to consecrate the bread and wine for Holy Communion.

Diocese… The geographical area over which a bishop has jurisdiction. We are part of the Diocese of Colorado, the community of Episcopal congregations in the State of Colorado.

Episcopal Church… The name of our denomination comes from the Greek New Testament word for Bishop, (literally, “overseer”). Because we have bishops, we are an Episcopal church. Although the Church of England began the Episcopal Church in the United States of America, we are independent of and equal to her within the Anglican Communion, which has in its membership many national churches from all over the world.

Eucharist… The service that includes the reading and preaching of the word of God and Holy Communion (or The Lord’s Supper or Mass). It comes from the Greek word for “thanksgiving.”

Liturgy… From the Greek words meaning “the work of the people”, “liturgy” means all the worship services of the Church and includes the customary ways those services take place. All churches have customary ways of doing group worship; they just don’t all call it “liturgy.”

Mission Church… A local congregation that receives financial assistance; it is not considered a parish.

Parish Church… A local congregation that is financially independent (the annual budget is derived from pledges of members).

Priest… An ordained member of the clergy set apart by the Church for particular ministries and authorized to celebrate Holy Communion and pronounce God’s absolution. After seminary or equivalent preparation, a person is ordained a transitional deacon and then priest.

Rector… The title of the senior priest in a parish church. If a rector lives in church-owned housing, it is called a “rectory.”

Vicar… The title of the priest in a mission church. If a vicar lives in church-owned housing, it is called a “vicarage.”

Tithe… The practice of giving one-tenth of one’s gross income, based in Holy Scripture and affirmed by the Episcopal Church as the standard of faithful giving or pledging for all its members.

Vestry… The lay leadership board of a parish church, named from the “vesting” room in which the group met in colonial days. The vestry shares with the clergy the spiritual leadership of the congregation. It also approves the budget and oversees the ministries and programs of the parish. With the guidance of the bishop, the vestry has the responsibility for calling a rector for the parish.

Bishop’s Committee… The lay leadership board of a mission church that does the same work as the vestry in a parish church. At St. Peter’s three persons are elected at the annual parish meeting to three-year terms on the Bishop’s Committee.

Warden… The term for the lay leaders of the vestry. The congregation elects the Wardens annually, and Wardens serve in leadership on the Bishop’s Committee or Vestry of a congregation.
