“The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-13 Opportunities to Serve
Here are descriptions of many of the ministries of St. Peter’s, which can lead to service both inside and outside the church body. Contact information is availabe by emailing the church office at info@stpetersbasalt.com Acolytes Acolytes are young people who assist at our Sunday worship and other special services; acolytes may begin at age 10 and serve throughout high school. Training is provided and most acolytes serve about once a month. Altar Guild The Altar Guild of St. Peter’s cares for the altar, the sanctuary and the preparations for our celebration of Holy Eucharist. This includes tending to the altar linens, altar vessels, flowers, candles and vestments. Choir A regular choir group, formed under the Minister of Music, practices after Church School/Sunday School We provide Christian education on Sundays (Sept. to May)
during the Discernment Committee The Discernment Committee was convened in July of 2003, at the direction of the Bishop’s Committee and the Vicar, to provide discernment for Karen Smith, a member of St. Peter’s. Discernment is provided for a person who feels a call to ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church. The Rev. Nina Stasser, then-rector of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Glenwood Springs, provided training and the group uses materials provided by the Diocese of Colorado for exploring a call to ordination through study, prayer, conversation, and reflection. Youth Group Youth group meets regularly two or three times per month and is open to all youth in 7th-12th grade and friends are welcome also. We eat pizza for dinner at our Sunday evening meetings. Our goals are to form bonds as a community of young people, and to learn and grow as Christians. Flower Guild The Flower Guild is responsible for our weekly flower arrangements on the altar. Families are able to sign up to offer the flowers in honor, memory, or thanksgiving for an event or person by signing the Flower Chart located in the back of the church on a bulletin board. The donation for flowers is $20 if two households share a Sunday, and $40 for one household. Barbara Stirling is the contact for the Flower Guild. Holiday Basket Project The Holiday Basket Project is a 22-year-old program coordinated by Christ Episcopal Church in Aspen, Colorado and sponsored by Aspen Interfaith Association. This program assists families in need that live in the El Jebel to Aspen area with Christmas gifts and food vouchers. Families are referred by local social service agencies. Another part of this program is money collection through change jars, this money goes towards food coupons for the families. St. Peter's Key Society This is an exciting program that recognizes people who remember St. Peter’s in their estate planning. This can be done through a will, life insurance policy, qualified retirement plan, stocks, or real estate gifts, or special gifts, some of which can provide the giver income for life. We are prepared to help you in your estate-planning journey and to encourage you to at least make a will as soon as possible. Lay Eucharistic Ministers and Lay Readers Lay Eucharistic Ministersand Lay Readers serve in leading worship and assisting the priest regularly at all of our Sunday liturgies and other special liturgies throughout the year. St. Peter’s provides training, and licensing is required through the Diocese of Colorado. Lay Readers are authorized to lead services of Morning or Evening Prayer (and others) in the absence of a priest. View the current Ministry Schedule Leadership Leadership at St. Peter’s takes many forms, though the primary body is through participation on the Bishop’s Committee. Persons who are called to be leaders are elected at the Annual Meeting, which usually takes place in January. The priest in consultation with the Bishop’s Committee appoints other officers of the church, such as Clerk, Treasurer, and Wardens. Smaller committees also serve to lead and administer the parish to fill certain needs, such as an annual audit, planning the budget, and stewardship. Nursery The nursery ministry of St. Peters provides care for infants and toddlers at the 9:30am Sunday service and childcare for many ages during other gatherings and meetings throughout the year. We often use (paid) teenagers to assist with nursery care, under the supervision of the Nursery Coordinator Staff Position. Parent and adult volunteers are also needed throughout the year. Contact our Nursery Coordinator Phoebe Gruel. Office Cleaning Cleaning the downstairs area of St. Peter's is scheduled for every other week. It is not an arduous job, especially when done by two in tandem, vacuuming, mopping and tidying the kitchen area and bathrooms. It is easily accomplished in two hours. Outreach St. Peter’s has traditionally made a commitment to give 10% of the income from pledges to spread God’s love to the community at large. The “Outreach Committee” is the group of church members who make the selections, and then those selections are communicated to the Bishop’s Committee for approval or changes. In recent years the members of the committee have attempted to provide gifts to a variety of organizations, focusing primarily on local organizations and secondarily on statewide, national and international gifts. Parents' Night Out Monthly during the school year, parents of young children have an opportunity for free, safe childcare for an evening out. Parent volunteers sponsor each evening; a donor pays for teenage assistance for the parent volunteers in order to provide this as a free gift for parents of young children. Parents who participate regularly are asked to be the sponsors for one evening each year. Prayer Ministry and Prayer Chain The purpose of the ministry of prayer is that St. Peter’s would be a community that prays for each other and those for whom we care. Anyone may participate in this ministry of prayer by contacting Karen Smith. When a need is identified, Karen will send an e-mail to all those on her list that will include a brief summary of the need and a prayer to be offered. Prayers may be offered for those who are in grief or trouble. Prayers may also be for thanksgivings or joyful things. On occasion a prayer group will be assembled to pray together to address a specific, and urgent need. Salt and Pepper Dinner Groups of 8-10 persons share a potluck dinner together once a month for 3 or 4 months, and then we mix things up again. Groups are established seasonally, and newcomers can always be added to a group. As a growing congregation, this is a way to invest time in getting to know a small group of the parish in an informal setting. Ushers Ushers serve as greeters at St. Peter’s, especially to newcomers and visitors. We direct people where to go, where to hang their coats, where the church is, and where the nursery is. Ushers also collect the offering during the church service, and direct the people during the taking of communion. Ushers also take an accurate head count that gets recorded for the church records. After the service, ushers pick up bulletins, and straighten chairs and books. Note: St. Peter’s is committed to providing safe and holy learning and formation spaces for children. All adults who work with children and youth are required to receive training in “Safeguarding God’s Children.” Opportunities for this training happen regularly each year. St. Peter's of the Valley
