St. Peter's Priest

Margaret AustinPlease welcome our new Vicar The Rev. Margaret S. Austin. Margaret, as she likes to be called, arrived with her husband, John, in the afternoon on Thurs., Jan 8. The moving van from Lubbock, TX, with their belongings on board was already waiting, parked in front of the St. Peter’s vicarage at 155 Coyote Circle in Blue Lake. It will take a while for the new Vicar to get settled, but she reports great delight in being in the Valley and especially in serving at St. Peter’s. Weather in our area is a bit different from northwest Texas, but that makes life more exciting. Rev. Austin was the rector of St. Stephen’s Church in Lubbock for the past five years. Under her leadership, that congregation grew from 12 children in Sunday School in 2003 to 125 in 2005. They also undertook a building project to renovate the sanctuary and expand the parish hall. Prior to serving in Lubbock, Margaret was associate rector at St. Stephen’s Church in Richmond, VA (1997- 2003) and assistant rector of Calvary Church in Pittsburgh, PA (1995-97). She is a native of New Orleans and was ordained to the priesthood by the Bishop of Louisiana in Jan. 1995. She received her M.Div. from the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in 1994. Margaret’s husband is the Rev. John Austin, a retired Episcopal priest. Although they have no children of their own, Margaret has had a very successful ministry with children -- as evidenced by the ten-fold growth of the children’s program in her last parish.
